How long does targeted therapy take to work for kidney cancer?

Kidney cancer may involve the kidney, nearby tissues or distant areas, and different sites can change at different speeds. Pain, blood in the urine, appetite and energy may improve, remain unchanged or vary for reasons unrelated to tumour activity. Your oncology team may compare scans, examine you and check kidney function, blood counts, blood pressure and other results. A stable scan can be a meaningful treatment outcome when disease control is the goal.

Take the treatment exactly as prescribed and attend laboratory and scan appointments. Keep notes about blood pressure readings if requested, urine changes, pain, appetite, fatigue and any missed dose. Tell the team about new medicines, supplements or procedures before using them. Do not change the dose or stop treatment without advice, even if side effects settle or you feel well.

Contact your care team promptly for blood in the urine, severe or persistent diarrhoea, repeated vomiting, a severe headache, vision changes, marked swelling, fever or a sudden change in urine output. Seek urgent help for chest pain, trouble breathing, confusion, fainting or heavy bleeding. Early assessment can help distinguish treatment effects from symptoms needing separate care.
