How long does targeted therapy take to work for acute myeloid leukaemia?

The timeframe depends on the medicine, the genetic feature it targets, the amount of leukaemia present and whether treatment is being used alone or with other therapy. A falling white-cell count can be encouraging, but it is not the only measure. Blood tests, examination and sometimes bone marrow testing show whether abnormal cells are reducing. Some people need a change in treatment if the response is too slow or side effects make the medicine unsuitable.

Take each dose exactly as prescribed and keep every blood-test appointment, even when you feel well. Tell the haematology team about new medicines, supplements, fever, bleeding, breathlessness or marked tiredness. Keep a simple record of doses and symptoms. Do not stop treatment because results have not changed yet; the team may need repeated tests before deciding whether the plan is working.

Contact your treatment team urgently for a fever, chills, sudden shortness of breath, chest pain, confusion, uncontrolled bleeding, black stools or a rapidly worsening condition. Acute myeloid leukaemia and its treatment can lower healthy blood cells, so an infection or bleeding problem may need prompt assessment rather than waiting for the next appointment.

Ask which test will show that the targeted medicine is working, when your first response check is planned, what result would lead to a treatment change, and which symptoms should trigger a same-day call.
