How long does stoma surgery take to work for bowel cancer?

Stoma surgery creates an opening on the abdomen so stool or urine can leave the body through a stoma into an appliance. After bowel surgery, the intestine may be quiet at first while normal movement returns.

The output may be absent initially, then change in amount, colour and consistency as eating and bowel movement resume. A colostomy and an ileostomy have different output patterns, so your surgical and stoma-care team will explain what is expected for yours.

Early success also includes a healthy-looking stoma, a secure pouch seal, comfortable skin and the ability to empty or change the appliance with support.

Walk as advised, drink the fluids recommended by your team and gradually follow the eating plan. Do not force food or fluids if you have been told to restrict them.

Watch the stoma and surrounding skin during pouch changes. Ask the stoma nurse to check the fit if there is leakage, soreness or difficulty keeping the appliance attached.

Before leaving hospital, practise emptying the pouch, learn which output changes matter and make sure you know who to call after surgery.

Contact your surgical team urgently if the stoma becomes dusky, purple, black or unusually pale, or if output stops along with cramping, swelling, nausea or vomiting.

Seek prompt help for heavy bleeding, fever, worsening abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, signs of dehydration such as very little urine, or skin breakdown that is spreading.

Emergency assessment is needed for severe pain, collapse, confusion or breathing difficulty.
