How long does STI screening take to work for pelvic inflammatory disease?

STI screening may use urine, vaginal or cervical swabs, blood tests, or other samples depending on the infection being assessed. A positive result can identify an infection that may contribute to PID, while a negative result does not rule out every cause of pelvic pain or PID.

PID is assessed using symptoms, examination and test results together. Treatment may be started when the clinical picture suggests PID, because delaying care while waiting for a result can allow inflammation to continue.

Give the clinic accurate information about symptoms, recent partners, contraception, allergies and medicines. If treatment is prescribed, take the full course and avoid sex until your clinician says it is safe. Partners may need assessment or treatment, depending on the infection found.

Ask how and when results will be delivered. Do not share antibiotics or stop them early because symptoms improve.

Seek urgent care for severe or worsening pelvic pain, fainting, heavy vaginal bleeding, high fever, repeated vomiting, pregnancy with pelvic pain, or feeling suddenly very unwell. These features can signal a complication requiring prompt assessment.

Ask which infections are being tested, when results are expected, whether treatment should start now, when sex can resume, and whether partners need testing or treatment.
