How long does stereotactic body radiotherapy take to work for non-small cell lung cancer?

The radiation is planned around the tumour’s size, position, breathing movement, and nearby organs. Treatment may be delivered in a small number of outpatient sessions. Radiation can continue to affect tumour cells after the final visit, so an early scan may not give the full picture.

Follow-up imaging can show inflammation or tissue change near the treated area as well as treatment response. The oncology team compares scans over time and considers symptoms, examination findings, and the original treatment goal before deciding what happens next.

Attend planning, treatment, and review appointments, and report new symptoms rather than waiting for the next scan. Keep taking regular medicines unless the team changes them. Ask when imaging is planned and what changes would lead to observation, additional treatment, or another consultation.

Contact the radiation or oncology team for worsening cough, chest discomfort, fever, increasing breathlessness, or marked fatigue. Seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, blue lips, sudden confusion, or chest pain. These symptoms need assessment and should not be attributed to expected radiation effects without advice.

Ask: How many treatment sessions are planned? When will the first follow-up scan occur? Which scan changes can reflect inflammation? What symptoms should prompt an urgent call? How will my response affect other lung-cancer treatments?
