How long does statin therapy take to work for peripheral arterial disease?

Peripheral arterial disease affects blood flow in arteries supplying the limbs. A statin lowers cholesterol and helps manage the artery disease risk associated with it. You may not feel a direct change in leg pain, because the medicine is not a rapid way to open a narrowed artery.

Your clinician may use blood tests and symptom review to assess treatment. Walking discomfort, skin changes and foot health can need separate attention, so an unchanged symptom does not by itself show whether the statin is helping.
