How long does splinting take to work for mallet finger?

Mallet finger occurs when the tendon that straightens the fingertip is injured, sometimes with a small bone injury. The splint holds the end joint straight so the tendon can heal in the correct position. Even briefly bending the fingertip during the treatment period can interrupt that position and extend recovery. A small amount of swelling, stiffness, or weakness may persist after the planned splinting period while the finger regains movement and control.

Keep the end joint straight whenever the splint is on and follow the exact wearing schedule given by your clinician. Keep the splint and skin dry, and support the fingertip during cleaning or changing it so it does not bend. Check for pressure sores, skin breakdown, colour change, or numbness. Do not shorten the treatment period because the finger looks straighter; the tendon may still be vulnerable. Exercises after splinting should begin only as instructed.

Arrange prompt review if the fingertip bends while the splint is off, the splint no longer holds it straight, or the skin becomes sore or damaged. Seek assessment after a new impact, worsening swelling, severe pain, numbness, or a cold or discoloured fingertip. Follow-up is also needed if the droop persists or returns after the planned treatment period.
