How long does splinting take to work for a clavicle fracture?

Short answer
Splinting supports comfort and protects a clavicle fracture immediately, but the bone commonly needs several weeks or longer to unite before normal loading returns.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Immediate purpose
- Rest the arm and reduce painful movement
- Healing check
- Examination and imaging guide progression
- Loading rule
- Do not lift until the fracture team permits it
Support is not the same as union
The clavicle, or collarbone, links the breastbone to the shoulder. After a fracture, a sling or prescribed support can rest the arm, reduce pulling on the injured area, and make movement more comfortable. It does not join the broken bone by itself. The fracture still needs biological healing, and pain may settle before the bone is ready for lifting or impact.
Healing depends on the fracture pattern, alignment, age, bone health, and whether the skin or nearby structures were injured. Follow-up examination and imaging help determine whether the position is acceptable and when shoulder motion or strengthening can progress.
Protect the shoulder while it heals
Wear the sling or support as instructed and keep the hand, wrist, and elbow moving if your clinician permits. Avoid lifting with the injured arm, pushing through the shoulder, contact activity, and falls. Keep the skin dry and inspect it for rubbing, especially around the neck and under the arm.
Use prescribed pain relief safely and attend scheduled reviews. Do not test the fracture by carrying weight simply because pain has reduced. Exercises are introduced in stages, with strengthening delayed until the treating clinician confirms that loading is suitable. Urgent symptoms
Get urgent medical help for trouble breathing or swallowing, rapidly increasing swelling, skin stretched tightly over the fracture, a cold or blue hand, new numbness, or inability to move the fingers. Contact your fracture team for worsening pain, fever, wound changes, or a support that causes severe rubbing or pressure.
Questions to ask
Ask how long the support should be worn, which arm movements are safe, when driving and work can resume, and when repeat imaging is planned. Clarify how to sleep comfortably, what pain pattern is expected, and when physiotherapy or strengthening should begin.

Questions people ask
Can I remove the sling to wash?
Often this is allowed with care, but follow your own fracture team's instructions and keep the arm protected while it is off.
Why does a lump remain over the collarbone?
A healing clavicle can form a firm area or altered contour. Your clinician can confirm that the position and healing are progressing appropriately.
