How Long Does a Skin Graft Take to Work for Burn Scars?

A graft is placed over prepared tissue and held still so it can receive nourishment and develop its own blood supply. The grafted area may look swollen, bruised, or uneven at first. The donor site has its own healing process and may feel sore. Clinicians check colour, warmth, drainage, and attachment during follow-up. Once the skin surface closes, texture and colour can continue to change; a burn scar may soften and become more flexible gradually rather than looking settled straight away.

Keep the graft and donor dressings dry and undisturbed for the period your surgeon specifies. Avoid pressure, rubbing, stretching, and strenuous activity affecting the area. Take medicines as prescribed and attend dressing changes so the team can assess both sites. Do not massage, moisturise, or expose the graft to direct sun until you receive permission. Later rehabilitation may include moisturising, massage, pressure therapy, or movement exercises.

Report increasing pain, spreading redness, warmth, pus, fever, heavy bleeding, a loose dressing, or fluid collecting beneath the graft. Urgent assessment is needed if the graft becomes very pale, grey, dark, cold, or suddenly separates. Reduced movement, worsening tightness, or a scar that repeatedly cracks should also be reviewed so rehabilitation can be adjusted.

Ask how the graft will be protected, when each dressing may be changed, what colour changes are expected, and when bathing, exercise, massage, and sun protection can begin. Ask what rehabilitation is appropriate for the scar’s location and whether the donor site needs separate care.
