How long does shoulder reduction take to work for shoulder dislocation?

Reduction guides the displaced shoulder joint back into position. It can change the shape and severe pain quickly, but it does not instantly heal stretched muscles, ligaments, the joint capsule, or any associated bone injury. The arm may remain guarded and weak, and a sling may be used for a period chosen by the treating team.

A post-reduction examination and imaging may be needed to check alignment and identify injuries. Recovery then includes protected movement followed by rehabilitation to restore shoulder control and reduce the chance of another episode.

Keep the sling and movement restrictions exactly as instructed, take prescribed pain relief safely, and attend the recommended review. Do not attempt to reduce the shoulder yourself or return to overhead sport, heavy lifting, or forceful reaching before clearance.

Begin rehabilitation only when the clinician says it is appropriate. Exercises are progressed from safe movement and muscle activation toward strength and control; the pace depends on examination findings, imaging, age, activity needs, and whether the shoulder has dislocated before.

Get emergency care for a shoulder that looks out of place again, severe or increasing pain, a cold or pale hand, loss of pulse, new numbness, or inability to move the fingers. Do not drive yourself if the arm is severely painful or circulation feels abnormal.

Ask whether imaging showed a fracture or tissue injury, how long the sling is needed, which movements are restricted, when physiotherapy starts, and what symptoms could indicate another dislocation.
