How long does a sentinel lymph node biopsy take to work for breast cancer?

The surgeon identifies the sentinel nodes, removes them, and sends the tissue to a laboratory. A pathologist checks whether cancer cells are present and may describe their size and features. The team combines this result with the breast tumour findings, imaging, and other pathology.

An early assessment may be available during surgery in selected situations, but it does not always replace the final report. The result can help determine whether additional lymph-node treatment, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, hormone treatment, or targeted treatment should be discussed.

Follow wound-care instructions, take prescribed pain relief as directed, and keep the arm moving within the limits given by your surgical team. Ask when the pathology report will be reviewed and whether an appointment is already arranged. Write down questions about the result and the next treatment choice.

Call the surgical team for increasing redness, warmth, swelling, drainage, wound opening, fever, or pain that is not controlled. Seek urgent help for heavy bleeding, sudden breathlessness, chest pain, or severe allergic symptoms. These concerns relate to recovery and should not wait for pathology results.

Ask: How many nodes were removed? When will the final report be ready? What does a negative or positive sentinel-node result mean for my plan? Could the result change radiotherapy or systemic treatment? What arm symptoms should I report?
