How long does semen analysis take to work for male factor infertility?

A laboratory examines semen for sperm concentration, movement and shape, along with the sample volume and other features. The result describes that sample at that time; it does not by itself identify every reason a couple may be having difficulty conceiving.

Results can vary between samples. A clinician may recommend another sample if the first result is outside the expected range or does not fit the wider clinical picture. Hormone checks, examination, medical history or other fertility tests may also be relevant.

Follow the laboratory instructions about collecting the sample, the collection container and the time between ejaculation and collection. Provide the complete sample if possible and tell the laboratory if any was missed or spilled, because that can affect interpretation.

Keep the results appointment. Ask what each finding means for conception, whether a repeat sample is advised, and whether medicines, illness, heat exposure or lifestyle factors could have influenced the result.

Arrange a clinical review if semen analysis is abnormal, if conception has not occurred despite ongoing attempts, or if there is testicular pain, swelling, a lump, blood in semen or difficulty ejaculating. Sudden severe testicular pain needs emergency assessment.

Ask whether the sample was complete, which results need repeating, whether a hormone or testicular assessment is appropriate, and how the findings affect the next fertility step for both partners.
