How long does sclerotherapy take to work for stasis dermatitis?

Stasis dermatitis develops when fluid and blood pressure build in the lower legs, often causing itch, redness, scaling, swelling, or darker skin. Sclerotherapy can close selected veins, but it is not a standalone treatment for every cause of venous congestion. Improvement depends on the veins involved, the condition of the skin, swelling control, and management of any underlying vein problem.

Inflammation and discoloration may settle more slowly than discomfort or swelling. New irritated areas can appear if venous pressure remains uncontrolled, so the treatment plan should be reviewed as the skin changes.

Use compression only as prescribed, keep moving with the activity recommended for you, and elevate the legs when advised. Moisturise intact dry skin, avoid scratching, and do not apply steroid or antibiotic creams unless a clinician has recommended them. Report open areas or weeping skin before an injection appointment so treatment can be planned safely.

Arrange prompt assessment for a leg that becomes suddenly more swollen, hot, painful, or red, or for an ulcer, spreading wound, or increasing drainage. Seek urgent help for chest pain, sudden breathlessness, or coughing blood. These symptoms require immediate evaluation rather than waiting for a cosmetic treatment to take effect.

Ask whether sclerotherapy is suitable while the dermatitis is active, how swelling will be controlled, and what skin-care plan should continue between treatments.
