How long does scar revision surgery take to work for hypertrophic scar?

Early swelling, redness, tightness, or tenderness can make the revised area look unlike the expected result. A new surgical scar also needs time to settle. Hypertrophic scars can remain raised while healing, so a surgeon may monitor the area and add treatments such as silicone care, pressure, injections, or other scar therapy if it begins to thicken again.

The pace depends on the scar's size, location, depth, skin tension, surgical method, and your personal healing pattern. Improvement is assessed over follow-up visits rather than from one early photograph.

Follow the wound-care instructions closely, keep dressings in place as directed, and avoid stretching or rubbing the incision until your surgeon permits normal activity. Protect healed skin from strong sunlight, because discoloration can become more noticeable during healing. Attend scheduled reviews so raised edges, persistent redness, or changes in the scar can be addressed early.

Contact your surgeon promptly if pain, warmth, redness, swelling, or drainage is increasing rather than easing, or if the wound opens. Seek urgent medical help for heavy bleeding, fever with feeling very unwell, or breathing difficulty. A firm or raised scar alone does not establish a complication, but a rapid change deserves assessment.
