How long does risk-reducing mastectomy take to work for a BRCA gene mutation?

A risk-reducing mastectomy removes most breast tissue before cancer is diagnosed. It is considered for some people with BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutations after discussion of personal risk, family history, imaging, reconstruction choices and alternatives. Because small amounts of breast tissue can remain, the operation lowers risk rather than erasing it.

The preventive effect starts with removal of the tissue at the operation. That is different from recovery: dressings, drains, discomfort, limited arm movement and changes in sensation can continue while the body heals. Reconstruction may happen at the same operation or in stages, so the appearance and feel of the chest can change during recovery.

Meet both the breast surgeon and, when relevant, a reconstruction specialist. Discuss whether the nipple and skin can be preserved, what tissue will be examined, possible reconstruction methods and how future breast checks will work. Arrange help with lifting, driving and household tasks. Follow wound and drain instructions, take prescribed medicines as directed and attend postoperative appointments so healing can be checked.

Call the surgical team for increasing redness, warmth, drainage, wound opening, fever or pain that is worsening rather than settling. Seek urgent help for sudden breathing difficulty, chest pain, faintness or heavy bleeding. A new lump or persistent swelling after recovery also deserves assessment, although it does not by itself show cancer.
