How long does radiotherapy take to work for vulvar cancer?

Radiation can damage cancer cells during treatment and after the last session. The review plan is shaped by the size and location of the vulvar cancer, whether radiotherapy is being used before or after surgery, and whether another treatment is included. A clinician may examine the vulva and groin, discuss pain and skin changes, and arrange imaging if it is needed. Treated skin can look red, sore, or swollen while healing, so an early appearance does not by itself show the final response.

Your team may be looking for disappearance or reduction of visible disease, or for control when complete removal is not the immediate aim. Bring questions to the review so the findings and next steps are clear.

Keep the treated area clean and follow the washing, dressing, pain-relief, and activity instructions from your team. Report increasing soreness, broken skin, discharge, urinary discomfort, or difficulty sitting or walking. Wear the clothing recommended for comfort and avoid applying creams or fragranced products unless approved. Continue follow-up after the skin begins to improve because response is assessed clinically, not by comfort alone.

Call your treatment team promptly for fever, rapidly worsening redness or swelling, pus-like discharge, bleeding that does not settle, inability to pass urine, or pain that is not controlled by the agreed plan. Seek urgent care for fainting, severe weakness, or sudden severe pain.

Ask when the treated area will be examined, whether imaging is planned, how healing changes may affect the assessment, and which skin, urinary, or pain symptoms should be reported immediately. Ask what will happen if the first review is unclear.
