How long does radiotherapy take to work for vaginal cancer?

Radiation affects cancer cells during the course and may continue to act afterwards. Your review schedule depends on whether treatment is external radiotherapy, internal treatment, treatment after surgery, or part of a combined plan. The team may use a pelvic examination, symptoms, and imaging to judge what has changed. Irritation of the vagina or nearby tissues can last beyond the final session, so bleeding, soreness, discharge, or tiredness should be interpreted with the examination rather than used alone to judge response.

The aim may be to remove visible disease, reduce it before another treatment, or control an area. For that reason, a smaller area is not the only possible useful outcome; stability can also matter when control is the goal.

Use the skin and vaginal-care instructions given by your team, take medicines as directed, and tell them about pain, bleeding, discharge, urinary changes, bowel changes, or difficulty drinking. Keep scheduled reviews even if symptoms are improving. Ask before using creams, douches, tampons, or supplements because treated tissue may be sensitive and products may interfere with the care plan.

Contact your oncology team promptly for heavy or persistent bleeding, foul-smelling discharge, fever, worsening pelvic pain, inability to pass urine, or diarrhoea that is difficult to control. Seek urgent help for severe weakness, fainting, or sudden severe pain. These symptoms may need assessment before the next planned review.

Ask when your first examination or scan will occur, what response the team is looking for, how long irritation may last, and which vaginal, urinary, or bowel symptoms require a same-day call. Ask how follow-up will continue after the first assessment.
