How long does radiotherapy take to work for tongue cancer?

Radiation injures cancer cells while they are being treated and may continue affecting them afterwards. The timing of review depends on whether radiotherapy is being used as the main treatment, after an operation, or with another treatment. Your clinician may inspect the tongue and neck, ask about swallowing and speech, and arrange imaging when it will add useful information. Mouth soreness can peak or persist for a period after treatment, so discomfort alone does not show whether the cancer is responding.

A response may mean the visible area is smaller, less active, or stable when preventing further growth is the aim. The planned review date gives tissues time to react and helps the team interpret findings alongside your treatment history.

Follow the mouth-care, pain-control, and nutrition plan from your team. Tell them if swallowing becomes harder, food sticks, your mouth is too sore to drink, or your weight is changing. Choose the foods and fluids your clinician recommends, avoid tobacco and alcohol if advised, and do not use mouth products or supplements without checking first. Keep all review appointments because the first assessment is only one part of ongoing monitoring.

Contact your treatment team promptly for fever, increasing swelling, bleeding that does not settle, worsening pain, or inability to maintain fluids. Seek urgent care for severe breathing difficulty, rapidly increasing tongue or neck swelling, or choking. Early help can prevent dehydration and allow pain or infection to be treated.

Ask when your first response check is planned, whether examination or imaging will be used, how treatment-related inflammation may affect the findings, and what changes in swallowing or speech should be reported immediately. Ask whom to call overnight or at weekends.
