How long does radiotherapy take to work for salivary gland cancer?

Radiation damages targeted cells progressively. The treatment may be used after surgery, alongside another treatment, or to control a tumour that cannot be removed in the same way. Your team may examine the mouth, jaw, neck and facial movement, then arrange imaging when it is appropriate for your plan.

Dry mouth, thick saliva, mouth soreness, taste changes, skin irritation or tiredness may occur because salivary glands and nearby tissues are sensitive to radiation. These effects can continue after treatment and do not prove that the tumour is responding or progressing.

Follow mouth-care and skin-care instructions, drink according to your team’s advice, and report trouble swallowing, reduced eating or worsening mouth pain. Ask whether you should see a dentist or speech and swallowing specialist before using products for dry mouth.

Contact your oncology team promptly for inability to drink, signs of dehydration, worsening swallowing difficulty, increasing neck swelling, new facial weakness or persistent bleeding. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, rapidly increasing swelling, severe bleeding or sudden confusion.
