How long does radiotherapy take to work for penile cancer?

Radiation causes changes in targeted cells over time rather than acting like an instant removal. A course may involve several appointments, and the treatment team may assess the skin, penis and nearby tissues during and after the course. The timing of examination or scans depends on whether radiotherapy is being used to treat the main tumour, reduce the chance of local return, or relieve symptoms.

The treated area can look irritated before the full treatment effect is clear. Redness, soreness, swelling or changes in urination can occur because healthy tissue near the target also receives some radiation. These effects do not by themselves show whether the cancer is responding.

Attend each appointment and follow the skin-care instructions from your radiotherapy team. Wash the area gently, avoid applying unapproved creams or fragranced products, and tell the team about increasing soreness, discharge or difficulty passing urine. Keep a record of symptoms and medicines so changes can be discussed at review.

Ask when the first response assessment is expected and what will be examined. Do not judge the result from day-to-day skin changes; response is interpreted using the examination, treatment plan and any tests your clinicians arrange. Contact your oncology team promptly for fever, rapidly worsening pain, heavy bleeding, spreading skin breakdown, foul-smelling discharge or inability to pass urine. Seek urgent medical help for severe bleeding, confusion, fainting or sudden difficulty breathing. These problems need assessment regardless of whether the cancer response has yet been measured.
