How long does radiotherapy take to work for Hodgkin lymphoma?

Radiotherapy damages lymphoma cells in the targeted field, while the body clears damaged cells over time. A lump or pressure symptom may not change immediately, and inflammation can briefly make the area feel tender or swollen. Hodgkin lymphoma treatment often involves more than one treatment approach, so your timing depends on whether radiotherapy follows medicine, is used for a specific area, or is intended to relieve symptoms. A scan performed too early may show inflammation as well as treatment change. Your haematology team chooses the review point and interprets the result with your examination and symptoms.

Complete the schedule given by your radiation team and attend blood tests or other appointments arranged by your haematology team. Protect treated skin as instructed, report pain or swelling, and keep a note of fevers, night sweats, itching, breathlessness, or changing lumps. Take prescribed medicines as directed and check before starting supplements. Maintain food and fluid intake as tolerated, with help from the team if appetite or swallowing is affected. Ask when the first scan will be useful and what result would change the next step.

Contact your oncology team promptly for a fever, chills, unexplained bleeding, rapidly increasing swelling, worsening breathlessness, or difficulty swallowing. Seek emergency care for severe breathing trouble, fainting, confusion, or sudden chest pressure. These symptoms may reflect infection, inflammation, or another urgent problem and should not be judged by whether radiotherapy seems to be working.

Ask what radiotherapy is intended to achieve in your treatment plan, when symptoms may change, and when imaging will assess the response. Clarify whether medicine and radiotherapy are being combined, what side effects need a same-day call, and how follow-up will continue after the course ends.
