How long does radiotherapy take to work for anal cancer?

Radiotherapy damages the ability of targeted cancer cells to keep growing. The treatment is delivered in scheduled sessions, and the effect is not always visible immediately when the course ends. Irritation around the anus, bowel changes and tiredness may build during treatment or shortly afterward, even while the cancer cells are responding.

Your specialist decides when to examine the area because an early examination can be difficult to interpret while inflammation is settling. A response may therefore be judged through more than one review rather than a single day’s symptoms.

Attend each scheduled session unless your radiotherapy team tells you otherwise. Wash gently, pat the skin dry and use only creams recommended by the team. Tell them early about diarrhoea, painful bowel movements, skin breakdown, poor appetite or difficulty drinking so symptom relief can be adjusted.

Wear soft, loose clothing and ask about suitable pain relief. Keep the review appointment after treatment, because the examination helps separate treatment irritation from the longer-term response.

Contact your oncology team urgently for uncontrolled pain, heavy rectal bleeding, inability to pass stool or urine, repeated vomiting, signs of dehydration, fever or rapidly worsening skin damage. Seek emergency help for fainting, severe weakness, chest pain or difficulty breathing.

Ask when your response examination is planned, which skin products and pain medicines are suitable, whether other treatments are being given alongside radiotherapy, and which bowel or bleeding symptoms require a same-day call.
