How long does punch excision take to work for acne scars?

Punch excision removes or releases the base of a sharply defined depressed scar through a small circular instrument. The site may be closed with a stitch or allowed to heal according to the technique used. Early swelling, redness, tenderness, crusting, or a visible line can make the result look unfinished. New tissue remodels as healing continues, and the colour and texture may keep changing after the surface has closed.

The procedure addresses selected scars rather than active acne or every uneven area. Several scars may need separate treatment, and additional resurfacing or scar care may be considered only after the treated sites have healed.

Keep the site clean and follow the dressing and wound-care instructions exactly. Do not pull at a stitch, scab, or crust. Protect the healing area from sunlight once advised, because inflammation can leave a darker or lighter mark. Attend the planned wound check or stitch removal, and tell the clinician about new acne lesions near the treatment area.
