The laser is directed at blood vessels in the lesion. Soon afterwards, the area may look darker, bruised, swollen, or irritated. Those early effects can obscure the response, so the clinician usually assesses progress after the skin has recovered rather than on the same day.

Infantile haemangiomas can change naturally as a child grows, and their depth, thickness, location, and current phase affect the choice and timing of treatment. Laser may be considered for selected surface changes; a specialist must decide whether it is suitable and whether another approach is needed.

Keep every planned review and follow the treating team's instructions for cleaning, dressings, bathing, and sun protection. Do not scratch, peel, or apply unapproved creams to the treated area. Take photographs only if the clinician recommends a consistent way to monitor change, and record any new bleeding, ulceration, or feeding or breathing difficulty when relevant to the lesion's location.
