How long does proton therapy take to work for childhood cancer?

Proton therapy damages cancer cells during treatment, but the biological response and shrinkage seen on scans may develop later. The treatment team plans the course around the child's cancer type, location, treatment goal and other therapies. Reviews may check energy, appetite, skin, pain, movement and other effects, while imaging is scheduled when it can answer a useful clinical question. Some side effects occur during treatment or soon afterwards; others can appear later, so follow-up continues after the final session.

Keep the radiation appointments and tell the team if illness, travel or anxiety may make attendance difficult. Follow skin-care and activity instructions, encourage fluids and meals as tolerated, and keep a simple record of symptoms and medicines. Ask how sedation, school, play and infection precautions apply to your child. Bring questions to review visits, because the team can explain whether a symptom is expected and whether the scan schedule needs to change.

Call the treatment team promptly for fever, repeated vomiting, inability to drink, worsening pain, unusual sleepiness, new weakness, a severe headache, or skin that becomes very painful or starts to break down. Seek emergency help for trouble breathing, a seizure, collapse, or sudden weakness. Children may not describe symptoms clearly, so a marked change in behaviour or function deserves attention. These signs need assessment and do not show on their own how well the cancer is responding.

Ask what the treatment course is intended to achieve, when response will be assessed, and which scan or examination will be used. Clarify expected short-term and later effects, skin care, nutrition, school activities and sedation arrangements. Ask who to call overnight, which symptoms are urgent, and how proton therapy fits with surgery, chemotherapy or other planned care.
