A thyroid nodule is a lump in the thyroid and may be benign or cancerous. Follow-up may involve a neck examination, thyroid blood tests, ultrasound, or a needle biopsy when the team needs more information. Ultrasound can describe size and features at one point; comparing later images shows whether the nodule is stable or changing. The plan depends on the nodule's appearance, symptoms, biopsy findings and any previous treatment. A nodule can remain under observation without needing immediate treatment.

Attend the review and imaging appointments your clinician schedules. Take prescribed thyroid medicine as directed, and bring previous scan or biopsy reports if another clinic has them. Notice whether the lump feels different and record persistent hoarseness, swallowing difficulty, throat pressure, cough or breathing changes. Do not repeatedly press the area to check it, because that can make the neck sore and make changes harder to judge. Ask when and how results will be shared.

Arrange an earlier clinical review if the lump grows, becomes firm or fixed, or if hoarseness or swallowing difficulty persists. Seek emergency help for sudden breathing difficulty, inability to swallow saliva, or rapidly increasing neck swelling. These are red flags that need prompt assessment; they do not mean the nodule is cancerous.
