Surveillance is monitoring, not a treatment that acts immediately. Your haematology team may compare blood protein measurements, blood counts, kidney-related results, calcium, symptoms and examination findings over time. The interval between reviews is chosen for your individual risk and previous results. A stable visit can be reassuring, but it does not replace later checks. A change may prompt another test, imaging, or a discussion about whether active treatment is needed. Smouldering myeloma can remain without symptoms, so feeling well does not by itself show that monitoring is complete.

Keep each appointment and complete requested blood or urine tests before the visit when instructed. Bring a list of new symptoms, medicines and supplements. Record persistent or changing bone pain, unusual tiredness, infections, thirst, constipation, nausea, reduced urine or unexplained weight change. Ask which results are being compared and when the next review is expected. Do not wait for a scheduled appointment to report a marked change in symptoms.

Contact your oncology or haematology team promptly for new severe bone or back pain, weakness or numbness, repeated infections, confusion, marked thirst, vomiting, or a clear reduction in urine. Seek emergency help for sudden loss of movement or sensation, severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, or confusion that develops quickly. These symptoms need assessment because they can signal a complication requiring timely care; they do not prove that the myeloma has progressed.

Ask what each surveillance test measures, which result would change the review schedule, and how you will receive results. Clarify whether you need urine testing or imaging, which symptoms should trigger an earlier call, and who to contact outside clinic hours. Ask how your personal risk affects the spacing of appointments and what would lead to a treatment discussion.
