How long does physiotherapy take to work for wrist sprain?

Short answer
Physiotherapy may improve wrist movement and everyday comfort over several weeks, while grip strength and heavier loading can take longer to return after a more irritated sprain.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Early milestone
- More comfortable movement during daily tasks.
- Later milestone
- Improved grip for planned lifting and sport.
What progress can look like
Treatment may begin with swelling control and comfortable wrist and finger movement, followed by forearm, grip and coordination exercises. Useful signs include turning a handle more easily, carrying a light object with less discomfort and improved motion in the direction that was restricted. Pain during heavy gripping can remain after simple activities have improved.
How to support recovery
Use a brace only as advised and keep nearby joints moving if that is part of your plan. Practise exercises slowly, avoid sudden forceful twisting, and increase lifting in stages. Tell the therapist about typing, cooking, childcare, driving or sport so the programme reflects your actual wrist demands.
When to seek care sooner
Seek assessment if the wrist is badly deformed, very swollen, numb, unusually cold, or impossible to move or use after an injury. Arrange review for persistent point tenderness, clicking, giving way, or pain that fails to improve, because a fracture or more significant ligament injury can resemble a sprain.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether imaging is needed, which wrist loads are safe now, how to measure grip and movement progress, when to stop using support, and what symptoms would suggest a different injury.

Questions people ask
Should I exercise through wrist pain?
Exercises should follow the tolerable range and dose prescribed; sharp pain, increasing swelling or lasting worsening should be reported.
Why is grip still weak when movement is better?
Strength and confidence often need separate gradual loading after pain and stiffness have started to settle.
