How long does physiotherapy take to work for trochanteric bursitis?

Short answer
Physiotherapy may reduce trochanteric bursitis pain over several weeks, but restoring walking, sleeping and side-lying comfort can take longer when the hip has been irritated for a long time.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Early change
- Walking or turning in bed may become easier before side-lying is comfortable.
- Progress guide
- Use next-day pain and function to judge activity increases.
What progress can look like
Treatment commonly addresses hip and trunk strength, pelvic control, walking mechanics and the loads placed on the outer hip. Progress may first appear as easier walking on level ground or less pain when turning in bed. Direct pressure from lying on the sore side, crossing the legs or climbing stairs may remain sensitive while the tissues regain tolerance.
How to support recovery
Follow the exercise dose given by your physiotherapist and increase activity in small steps. Avoid repeatedly testing the painful side, and consider changing sleep position or using support between the knees if advised. Break up long walks, hills and stair sessions while symptoms are irritable, then rebuild them as your strength and next-day comfort improve.
When to seek care sooner
Arrange medical review for severe pain after a fall, inability to bear weight, a hot or visibly swollen hip, fever, unexplained weight change, or pain that is constant at rest. Reassessment is also sensible when symptoms do not gradually settle, because pain at the outer hip can have causes other than an irritated bursa.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which movements are currently overloading the hip, how to judge an acceptable exercise response, when walking or side sleeping can be increased, and what findings would prompt a different diagnosis or treatment.

Questions people ask
Should I stop all activity?
Usually the aim is to modify aggravating loads rather than remain completely inactive; your therapist can select tolerable movement and strengthening.
Why is lying on the painful side still difficult?
Direct pressure can remain sensitive after movement has improved, so side-lying tolerance may return later than everyday walking.
