How long does physiotherapy take to work for muscle strain?

Short answer
Physiotherapy often produces functional improvement over several sessions, but a muscle strain may need longer before full strength and confidence return.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Main variable
- Strain severity and the muscle involved
- Safe progression
- Comfortable movement followed by graded resistance and task practice
What the timeline depends on
A strain involves overstretched or damaged muscle fibres. The affected muscle, severity, pain, strength loss and the demands of your job or sport all influence progress. Treatment commonly starts with comfortable movement and gradually introduces resistance. A temporary improvement in pain does not necessarily mean the tissue is ready for sprinting, lifting or sudden changes of direction.
Making physiotherapy work well
Use the home programme consistently, but keep each exercise within the agreed level. Warm up as advised, avoid sudden increases in load and record how the muscle responds later that day and the next morning. Tell your therapist about repeated flare-ups, weakness or difficulty with a specific task. When to seek care
Seek assessment if you felt a pop followed by marked weakness, cannot use the limb normally, develop substantial swelling or bruising, or have pain that is worsening. Reassessment is appropriate when progress stops or the muscle repeatedly gives way during ordinary activity.
Questions to take to an appointment
Ask what level of stretching and resistance is appropriate, which movement should be tested before return to sport, and how to increase activity without overloading the healing muscle. Clarify what to do after a painful flare.

Questions people ask
Should I stretch a strained muscle?
Only use the amount and direction recommended for your stage; forceful stretching can aggravate symptoms.
Why does strength lag behind pain relief?
Pain may settle before muscle capacity and coordination have been rebuilt, so strengthening remains part of a safe return.
