How long does physiotherapy take to work for clavicle fracture?

Short answer

After a clavicle fracture, physiotherapy usually improves shoulder movement gradually once healing allows, while strength and overhead function take longer to rebuild.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Sequence
Movement comes before heavier strengthening and demanding overhead tasks.
Clearance
Activity progression should follow fracture healing checks.

Why timing varies

A broken collarbone needs time to heal before the shoulder is loaded fully. Early rehabilitation may focus on comfortable movement of the elbow, wrist and shoulder within the limits set by the treating clinician. Later work can address shoulder-blade control, rotator-cuff and upper-arm strength, posture, lifting and reaching.

The plan depends on fracture position, symptoms, follow-up findings, treatment method, arm dominance and daily demands. Pain can settle before the bone and surrounding tissues are ready for heavy lifting, so feeling better is not the same as being cleared for every activity.

Supporting a safe return of movement

Follow the restrictions and exercises provided by the fracture team. Do not add lifting, contact activity or forceful stretching until clearance is given. Keep appointments so healing and shoulder movement can be checked. Report increasing pain, new swelling or altered sensation rather than pushing through it. Once permitted, build range and strength gradually, using the prescribed repetitions and rest periods.

When to seek medical advice

Seek prompt care for new numbness or weakness in the arm or hand, a cold or pale hand, sudden deformity, severe increasing pain, breathing difficulty or chest pain. Contact the fracture team if pain remains high, the wound changes after surgery, or shoulder function is worsening rather than progressing.

Questions for your care team

Ask when shoulder motion, resistance exercises, driving, work and sport can be resumed. Clarify which movements are restricted, how healing will be assessed, and what pain or clicking should trigger an earlier review with the surgeon or physiotherapist.

Questions people ask

Can I start shoulder exercises immediately?

Only use movements approved for your stage of healing. Some exercises may be appropriate early, while resisted or overhead work may need to wait.

Why is my shoulder weak after the fracture?

Protection, reduced use and pain can reduce strength and coordination. Gradual rehabilitation helps restore these while respecting bone healing.
