How long does PGT-M take to work for a thalassaemia carrier?

Being a thalassaemia carrier does not by itself describe the baby's genetic status. The reproductive risk depends on the variants carried by both partners and the specific thalassaemia condition involved. Genetic counselling and partner testing help define whether PGT-M is suitable and what the laboratory must identify.

Once a personalised test is ready, IVF embryos can be biopsied and examined for the specified variants. Embryos are commonly held while results are reviewed, then the fertility team discusses which embryo may be considered for transfer. Timing differs between laboratories and families.

Bring haemoglobinopathy reports and any known family genetic results to genetic counselling. Ask whether partner testing, parental samples, or additional family samples are needed. Get a written schedule for test development, IVF monitoring, biopsy, results, freezing, transfer, and pregnancy testing.

During IVF, report severe pelvic pain, heavy bleeding, faintness, breathing difficulty, or sudden abdominal enlargement promptly. Contact the genetics team if a new laboratory result changes the family's known variant information, because the embryo test may need review.
