How long does perineal repair take to work for postpartum haemorrhage?

A repaired tear may stop bleeding from damaged tissue, but heavy bleeding after birth can also come from the uterus not tightening, retained placental tissue, or other birth-related problems. Perineal repair therefore is not a general treatment for every postpartum haemorrhage. The maternity team checks the bleeding source, vital signs, the uterus, the placenta, and the birth canal, then combines treatments as needed. The wound may heal over time even after the immediate bleeding has been controlled.

Tell the midwife or obstetric team immediately about heavy or increasing bleeding, clots, dizziness, weakness, breathlessness, or a racing heartbeat. If you are at home, call emergency services rather than travelling alone. Lie down while waiting for help, keep warm, and have someone stay with you. Postpartum haemorrhage is an emergency when bleeding is heavy, persistent, or accompanied by faintness, confusion, pale or clammy skin, severe pain, or difficulty breathing. Emergency care is also needed if bleeding increases after discharge or you feel suddenly unwell. The urgency comes from the bleeding and your condition, not from waiting to see whether a repaired tear settles.

Ask what caused the bleeding, whether a tear was repaired, what monitoring is needed, and which symptoms should trigger urgent return. Ask about wound care, anaemia assessment, pain relief, activity, and follow-up after discharge.
