How long does pelvic ultrasound take to work for ovarian cancer?

Pelvic ultrasound uses sound waves to create images of pelvic organs, including the ovaries and uterus. The sonographer may scan through the lower abdomen and, when appropriate, use an internal probe to obtain closer views. The examination can identify features that need further assessment, but an ultrasound image alone does not establish every diagnosis.

The report may be available after the images are reviewed, and the clinician who requested the scan explains what the findings mean. Further imaging, blood tests or a tissue sample may be considered depending on the result and symptoms.

Follow the imaging centre's instructions about drinking water or emptying your bladder. Wear clothing that allows access to the lower abdomen and tell staff if you are uncomfortable or if an internal scan is not suitable for you. Bring relevant previous reports if requested.

Contact a clinician promptly for severe pelvic pain, heavy vaginal bleeding, fainting, persistent vomiting, fever or a swollen abdomen. An ultrasound appointment should not delay urgent assessment of rapidly worsening symptoms.

Ask whether the scan will be abdominal, internal or both, when the report will be discussed, what happens if an area needs more assessment, and whether you need a full bladder.
