An imperforate hymen is a membrane that fully covers the vaginal opening. Menstrual blood can collect behind it, which may cause cyclical pelvic pain, pressure, or an absent menstrual flow despite other signs of puberty. Ultrasound uses sound waves to create images and may help clinicians assess the uterus, vagina, and any fluid or blood that has collected.

The scan itself is an assessment, not a treatment, so symptoms do not resolve because the images were taken. The clinician may discuss the findings during or after the appointment, or a radiology report may be sent to the referring team. If the images do not answer the question, examination or another imaging approach may be considered.

Ask the imaging service whether a full bladder is needed and what preparation is suitable. Tell the team about pain, anxiety, difficulty using internal products, or concerns about an internal examination.
