A rectocele repair supports the tissue between the vagina and rectum. Early soreness, swelling, or a changed sensation during bowel movements can occur while the area recovers. The feeling of pressure or incomplete emptying may improve gradually, and bowel habits may need time to become predictable.

Constipation or straining can make recovery harder, but persistent difficulty emptying your bowel does not automatically mean the repair has failed. The procedure performed, your bowel pattern, pelvic muscle coordination, and any other pelvic conditions all affect the timeline.

Use the bowel-care plan supplied by your clinician, which may include fluids, fibre, a stool-softening medicine, or a gentle laxative. Walk lightly as advised, avoid heavy lifting and straining, and do not insert anything vaginally until your surgeon says it is safe.

Keep your follow-up appointment even if the bulge feels better. Mention pain with bowel movements, leakage, urgency, or a continuing sensation of blockage so the team can assess the cause.

Contact your care team promptly for increasing pelvic pain, fever, foul-smelling discharge, wound problems, inability to pass urine, or inability to pass stool or gas. Seek urgent help for heavy bleeding, fainting, chest pain, breathing difficulty, or a painful swollen leg.
