How long does testicle removal surgery take to work for testicular cancer?

An orchidectomy removes the testicle through an incision in the groin, rather than through the scrotal skin. Removing the affected testicle provides the tissue needed for a definitive laboratory diagnosis and removes the known testicular tumour. The result does not by itself show whether cancer cells are elsewhere, so doctors use the pathology report, examination, and scans to plan follow-up.

Tenderness, bruising, swelling, and tiredness are common during early healing. If the remaining testicle is healthy, it may continue making hormones and sperm, but this varies. Discuss sperm storage before treatment if future fertility matters to you, and ask about an implant if you want to consider one.

Use pain relief as directed, support the area as advised, keep the incision clean and dry, and walk gently. Avoid strenuous lifting until your surgeon says it is safe. Attend the results appointment: some people need surveillance, while others may be offered chemotherapy, radiotherapy, or another procedure based on their findings.

Before leaving, confirm how to care for the wound, when to return, and whom to call outside clinic hours. Tell the team about any regular medicine or concern about body image, sexual function, hormones, or fertility.

Call your surgical team if pain is increasing, the wound becomes red or starts draining, swelling is getting worse, or you develop fever or difficulty passing urine. Get urgent help for heavy bleeding, sudden breathlessness, chest pain, fainting, or a painful swollen calf.

Ask when the pathology result will be ready, how the remaining testicle will be monitored, whether additional treatment is advised, and when normal activities can restart. Ask specifically about fertility preservation, testosterone symptoms, and prosthesis options if relevant.
