How long does oral rehydration therapy take to work for gastroenteritis?

Gastroenteritis irritates the stomach and bowel and may cause vomiting, diarrhoea, cramps, and fever. Those symptoms can continue while the solution is correcting fluid and salt losses. Improvement is suggested by better alertness, less dizziness on standing, a moist mouth, and urine becoming more regular. A temporary improvement can reverse if diarrhoea or vomiting continues.

Dissolve oral rehydration sachets in the correct volume of safe water. Take small sips at frequent intervals; a spoon or syringe can help a child take tiny amounts. If vomiting occurs, pause briefly and restart gently. Keep offering fluids and resume simple foods when appetite returns. Avoid sharing towels and utensils, wash hands with soap, and stay away from food preparation while infectious symptoms continue.

Get urgent help for confusion, collapse, severe weakness, severe abdominal pain, blood in vomit or stool, or breathing that becomes unusually fast. Medical advice is needed if the person cannot keep down sips, passes very little urine, or shows no hydration improvement after several hours. Infants, older adults, pregnant people, and those with significant medical conditions should seek advice early.
