How long does oral corticosteroid treatment take to work for Stevens-Johnson syndrome?

Stevens-Johnson syndrome is a serious reaction that can cause widespread skin injury and painful involvement of the eyes, mouth, or genitals. Doctors assess whether the reaction is stopping, whether new skin injury is appearing, and whether hydration, breathing, temperature, and organ function are stable. Corticosteroids are only one possible part of care; stopping the suspected trigger and supportive treatment are also central. Healing continues after the immune reaction is controlled.

This condition requires emergency or hospital assessment, not home observation while waiting for tablets to work. Do not restart a suspected medicine unless the treating team specifically says to do so. Tell clinicians about every recent medicine, supplement, and infection. Follow fluid, wound, eye, mouth, and pain-care instructions, and avoid rubbing or removing damaged skin.

Seek emergency care immediately for a rapidly spreading rash, skin tenderness or peeling, mouth or eye pain, difficulty swallowing, breathing difficulty, faintness, or reduced urination. Anyone already receiving treatment should alert staff at once if eye symptoms, fever, confusion, or worsening skin loss develops.

Ask which medicine or exposure is suspected, how the team will monitor the eyes and internal organs, when new skin injury should stop, and which symptoms require immediate escalation. Ask how long wound, mouth, and eye follow-up will continue after discharge.
