How Long Does Oral Corticosteroid Treatment Take to Work for Angioedema?

Oral corticosteroids may start reducing angioedema swelling within several hours, although visible improvement can take longer and depends on the cause, severity, and prescribed treatment plan. The medicine works by calming inflammation; it does not remove every possible trigger of swelling. Some people need additional treatment, especially when angioedema is linked to an allergic reaction or another medicine.

A gradual reduction in tightness, warmth, or swelling suggests that treatment may be taking effect, but the affected area can remain puffy after inflammation has begun to settle. Swelling can also recur if the trigger continues. Corticosteroids are not equally useful for every form of angioedema, so a delayed response does not mean you should take an extra dose. The full course may need to be completed even after symptoms begin to improve, according to the prescriber’s instructions.

Get emergency help immediately for swelling of the tongue, mouth, or throat; trouble breathing or swallowing; a hoarse or changing voice; dizziness, faintness, or sudden weakness; or rapidly worsening symptoms. Do not wait for oral corticosteroids to take effect when the airway may be involved. If symptoms are severe or follow a suspected allergic reaction, use prescribed emergency medicine as directed and seek emergency assessment.

Ask what improvement should look like, when to report no response, whether the suspected cause changes treatment, and whether any of your current medicines could be contributing to the swelling.
