How long does oral antifungal treatment take to work for tinea versicolor?

Oral antifungal treatment can begin controlling tinea versicolor within days, but the discoloured skin may take weeks or months to regain its usual colour. The fungus may be cleared before the lighter or darker patches blend back into surrounding skin. Fading of the rash is therefore not an immediate measure of whether treatment has worked.

Tinea versicolor affects the outer skin and can alter pigment production. After the overgrowth is controlled, the surface may look scaly or feel irritated for a short time, while pigment-producing cells gradually return to their usual pattern. New spots, fine scale, or itching can suggest ongoing activity, but uneven colour alone does not prove that the fungus remains. Sun exposure can make the contrast between treated patches and surrounding skin more noticeable.

Take the medicine exactly as prescribed and do not repeat or extend the course without medical advice. Tell the prescriber about liver disease, regular medicines, pregnancy, or breastfeeding before starting an oral antifungal. Keep the skin cool and dry when possible, use gentle skin care, and protect exposed areas from strong sunlight so colour differences are less pronounced. Arrange a review if scaling or itch continues after the prescribed course, or if fresh patches appear. A clinician may need to confirm the diagnosis or discuss a different treatment.

Contact the prescribing clinician promptly if you develop yellowing of the skin or eyes, unusually dark urine, severe nausea, marked tiredness, or pain under the ribs while taking the medicine. Seek urgent help for swelling of the face or throat, trouble breathing, or a rapidly spreading blistering rash. If the patches do not behave as expected, a skin examination can check whether another condition is causing the colour change.
