Perioral dermatitis causes small bumps, redness, burning, or scaling around the mouth and sometimes around the nose or eyes. Treatment calms the inflammatory process gradually; the skin barrier may remain sensitive after new bumps begin to reduce.

Early improvement may show as fewer new bumps, less burning, and a smaller area of redness. Temporary dryness or mild fluctuation does not necessarily mean treatment has failed.
