How long does operative hysteroscopy take to work for uterine fibroids?

Hysteroscopy is suited to fibroids growing into the cavity, where they may contribute to heavy bleeding, cramping, or difficulty becoming pregnant. A larger or deeply embedded fibroid may need more than one treatment, or a different approach may be discussed. Periods may take a cycle or more to show their new pattern, and improvement depends on the fibroid’s position, size, and the symptoms it caused. The procedure does not remove fibroids elsewhere in the uterus.

Use the pain relief recommended by your clinician and expect some light bleeding or discharge while the cervix and uterine lining recover. Avoid sex, tampons, swimming, or strenuous activity for the period advised by your care team. Record bleeding, pain, and the timing of your next period. Attend follow-up so the clinician can discuss the operative result and whether remaining fibroid tissue needs review.

Call your clinician if bleeding becomes heavy, pain is severe or worsening, you develop fever, or discharge smells unpleasant. Urgent assessment is needed for fainting, severe abdominal pain, or breathing difficulty after the procedure.

Ask whether the fibroid was completely removed, when your next period may reflect the treatment, when you can resume sex or try to conceive, and how other fibroids will be monitored.
