How long does nutrition support take to work for oral mucositis?

Oral mucositis causes sore, inflamed mouth tissues and can make chewing, swallowing or drinking painful. Nutrition support does not directly heal the inflammation; it helps you meet fluid and energy needs while the mouth recovers and the oncology team treats symptoms. Soft foods, nourishing drinks or another delivery method may be considered according to your swallowing safety and treatment plan.

Choose the smooth or cooled foods recommended by your team and avoid items that sting, such as spicy, acidic or rough-textured foods if they worsen pain. Take frequent sips and use prescribed mouth care. Tell the team if pain prevents drinking, if swallowing changes or if mouth sores interfere with medicines. A dietitian can alter texture and portions as symptoms change.

Contact the oncology team promptly if you cannot drink, cannot swallow medicines, have persistent vomiting, fever or worsening mouth bleeding. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, choking, collapse or confusion. Do not apply non-prescribed substances to sores or change tube feeds without clinical guidance.
