How long does nutrition support take to work for cancer cachexia?

Cancer cachexia is a complex wasting condition involving loss of muscle and appetite. Extra calories alone may not correct the body changes driving it. A dietitian may suggest oral drinks, food adjustments or tube or vein-delivered nutrition when eating is difficult. Early changes may include better fluid intake, easier meals or less fatigue; weight and muscle can take longer to change, and some people may not gain weight.

Follow the plan in small, frequent amounts and record what you manage to eat and drink, along with nausea, vomiting, bowel changes and swallowing difficulty. Tell the oncology team if tastes change or meals become exhausting. They can adjust the texture, timing or delivery method and review medicines that affect appetite or symptoms. Nutrition support works alongside cancer treatment and symptom control rather than replacing them.

Contact the cancer team promptly if you cannot keep fluids down, are choking, become unusually drowsy or confused, or have much less urine. Urgent assessment is needed for severe breathing difficulty, collapse or sudden inability to swallow. Do not increase tube or vein-delivered nutrition without the supervising team.
