How long does NIPT take to work for Down syndrome?

NIPT examines small fragments of placental DNA in a maternal blood sample. The test screens for a higher or lower chance of Down syndrome; it does not diagnose the condition. A laboratory may need extra time if the sample contains too little fetal DNA to interpret. A higher-chance result needs discussion with your maternity team and may be followed by a diagnostic test before decisions are made.

Ask the clinic when the sample was sent and how results will be delivered. Keep your contact details current, and write down questions about screening versus diagnosis. If the result is delayed or cannot be reported, your clinician can explain whether repeating the blood test or choosing another form of screening is suitable. Contact your maternity service promptly if you receive a higher-chance result, an unreportable result, or advice for further testing, so you can discuss the next step. Seek urgent pregnancy care for heavy bleeding, severe abdominal pain, fainting, or fluid leakage; these symptoms are not explained by the waiting time for NIPT.
