How long does a new COVID variant last?

The name of a variant does not predict exactly how long one person will feel ill. Duration is influenced by the infection itself, previous immunity, health conditions and the response of the body. Sore throat, fever and aches may settle before cough or tiredness. Loss of smell or taste and difficulty concentrating can also outlast the early respiratory symptoms.

A symptom lasting longer does not by itself show that the infection is still active. If recovery stalls, symptoms worsen, or new problems appear after improvement, a clinician can check for complications or another cause.

Prioritise sleep, fluids and gentle activity. Increase activity gradually and pause if exertion causes a marked setback. Follow local infection-control advice while acutely unwell, and ask promptly about treatment if you have a higher risk of severe disease. Keep a simple record of breathing, temperature and energy to describe changes accurately.

Get urgent medical help for severe breathlessness, chest pain or pressure, confusion, difficulty staying awake, or blue, grey or very pale lips or skin. Seek advice when fever or breathing symptoms are worsening, fluids cannot be kept down, or persistent symptoms are stopping normal activities.
