How long does a neck dissection take to work for mouth cancer?

Mouth cancer can involve lymph nodes in the neck, even when the neck does not feel swollen. A neck dissection removes lymph nodes from defined regions so they can be treated and examined. It may be done with surgery on the mouth, and the exact plan depends on the tumour's position and the clinical assessment.

Pathology describes whether cancer cells are present in the removed nodes and records features that help guide the next discussion. The operation itself does not provide an instant scan result, and swelling or numbness after surgery does not show whether treatment has worked.

Follow instructions for wound care, drains, pain relief, eating and activity. Keep follow-up appointments for wound checks and the pathology discussion. Ask about exercises for the neck, jaw and shoulder, particularly if movement feels restricted. Report changes in swallowing, speech, saliva or shoulder function so the team can assess them early.

Get urgent help for breathing difficulty, rapidly expanding neck swelling or heavy bleeding. Contact the surgical team promptly for fever, increasing wound redness, pus, uncontrolled pain or repeated inability to drink. These signs need medical review and should not be explained away as normal recovery.

Ask which lymph nodes will be removed, how the mouth operation and neck dissection fit together, when pathology will be available, what symptoms are expected during recovery and whether radiotherapy or another treatment could be discussed.
