How long does a neck dissection take to work for head and neck cancer?

A neck dissection is a surgical procedure used to remove lymph nodes from one side or selected areas of the neck. The surgeon may perform it with removal of a primary tumour or as a planned part of treatment. The removed tissue is examined by a pathologist, and the findings help the team decide whether additional treatment is needed.

Swelling, tightness, numbness and reduced shoulder movement can occur after surgery. These changes may improve gradually, while the pathology result and the wider treatment plan are discussed at follow-up.

Keep the wound clean and follow instructions about dressings, drains, medicines and activity. Attend wound and pathology follow-up. Gentle exercises or physiotherapy may be recommended for the neck and shoulder; do them only as advised. Tell the team about swallowing, speech, pain or shoulder problems so support can be arranged.

Contact the surgical team urgently for rapidly increasing neck swelling, bleeding, breathing difficulty, fever, worsening redness or fluid leaking from the wound. New weakness, severe swallowing difficulty or inability to keep fluids down also needs prompt assessment. Do not wait for a routine review when symptoms are quickly worsening.

Ask which lymph-node areas will be removed, whether a primary tumour operation is planned, how drains and shoulder exercises will be managed, when pathology will be discussed and whether further treatment may follow.
