How long does nebuliser treatment take to work for croup?

Croup causes swelling around the voice box and upper windpipe. The mist may reduce that swelling, making the harsh, barking cough or noisy breathing easier. Improvement can be noticeable during or shortly after treatment, but the response may be temporary and depends on the severity of the episode. A calmer child often breathes more comfortably, so keeping the child settled matters while a clinician assesses them.

The cough may remain after breathing improves. Treatment timing is not a guarantee that the episode has ended, especially when symptoms are worse at night or return after the child becomes upset.

Follow the prescribed treatment plan and keep the child upright and calm. Avoid forcing food or drink while breathing is difficult. Use any steroid medicine exactly as directed, and do not use steam or unprescribed cough medicines. Stay nearby after treatment and note whether noisy breathing occurs when the child is resting, because that detail helps determine the next step.

Get urgent help if noisy breathing continues while the child is resting, the skin pulls in between the ribs, the child cannot speak or drink comfortably, becomes drowsy, or develops blue or grey lips. Call emergency services if breathing pauses or becomes severely laboured. Return for assessment if symptoms worsen after initial improvement.
